World
Passport Project: take one they're free. The initiation of Sonya
Spry: installation artist and book maker. To apply for this
internationally sought after passport you are not required to
fill in an application form, sign any declarations or make any
statements. You are a world citizen therefore you automatically
have global citizenship status. All recognized passports have
been handmade and so far, 1521 World Passports have been issued.
All passports are free. The document acknowledging world wide
movement is translated in 7 languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese,
Chinese, German, French and Russian. This is a public art project
with a visual and interactive concept investigating and discussing
universal equality or global recognition and the right of freedom
to travel in our world without the inhibition of borders, boundaries
or official visas and bureaucratic interference. The idea originated
from formalities and inequalities that the artist experienced
during her extensive traveling and red-tape laden immigration
to Europe. Part of www.underthesamesky.net
and www.perfectworldproject.org
and later due to the artist travelling by bicycle, the 'what
a wonderful world tour': www.tour.tk.
Not having a permanent address, the philosophy behind the project
took on more of a role as an internet art work: make one, they're
free with the chance for the submission of world uniting ideas
and testimony from applicants across the globe. The first stages
of development began in the artist's second year of study in
2001, at the AbvkA Art
Academy in Arnhem, NL. The project has grown over the last years
in ample diversity and has been shown in various forms at 11
exhibitions in Europe and Africa. Thousands of people have participated
in, discussed, experienced and above all supported the concept
behind the world-passport project. The artist says: for many
years, I've battled with bureaucratic organisations and had
to supply pieces of paper that declare my existence or explain
that I am, who I say I am. The ideal solution would be a world
identity document where all applicants are successful as long
as they agree to the terms that everyone around the globe has
the same rights. Initial thoughts were to create a passport
just like any other, hence giving it the sense of validity that
we have come to know and trust. However, after time and many
trial runs, I realised that simply the concept of a world passport
was all that was necessary. Documents and visas are irrelevant,
rules and regulations not necessary and signatures, logos and
stamps purely artistic. The story: Take One They're Free was
soon after written investigating and highlighting this hypothesis:
It was important that the broadcast of this story also be reliant
on the public supporting its distribution, rejecting any of
the bureaucratic traditions already in place. This is not about
trying to create a new government, organization or movement,
nor is it adding another establishment to our society.
The united nations states that recognition of the inherent dignity
and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the
human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace
in the world. Section 13.2 of the Universal
Declaration of Human Rights: everyone has the right to leave
any country, including his own, and to return to his country.
If our way of thinking could evolve to believe that we are all
equal and see our planet as a unified world, then there would
be no need for border control and immigration procedures and
our non-alienation of each other would lead to universal migration
and natural passage around the globe. Support this project by
broadening your horizons and voicing your thoughts and ideas.
